Penguin Publishing

A very important part of the industry for illustrators to think about is publishing. We talked about this in today’s lecture as most illustrators will work in publishing. It’s important for us to know all the different types and how it works. Publishing in the UK has one of the biggest exports worth around £4.5 billion. This is far more than the movie and music industries. It plays an important part selling all types of books from non fiction novels to magazines. Illustrators can find a wealth of work when it comes to publishing, from creating front covers to little illustrated details.

One part of the industry is small press. These are small independent publishers who do a lot of their own stuff and help lesser known illustrators/writers get started. They can be very interesting places to work at or work for because they often come up with new and existing ideas. They tend to be a bit more daring with what they produce and then these new ideas go on to influence the large press. Because of this some small press have had a rise in demand for the products, this means that some of their books end up on the high street.

A very popular part of publishing is children’s books. This a place where illustrators are needed and can find a lot of work. Books for small children such as picture books require an illustrator to tell the story and make the book look visually pleasing. Of course children’s books are not all picture books. They also cover children’s and teen novels, which also need illustrated covers.

Journals play an important part but they cover a more factual market. Most illustrates in this sect of publishing create factual illustrations for things like science books, education material and reference. Most journals use photographs instead of illustrations but hand drawn diagrams are still used. There could be some interesting opportunities for medical science illustrators and people who are more interested in drawing correctly according to science.

Next is the editorial industry which covers mainly newspapers and magazines. This is a very fast pace place to work, things have to be done in a very short space of time. A lot of newspapers and magazines now have online publications as well. This way of publishing really relies on cover design, it needs to really catch the attention of a consumer, often as they are walking past.

Obviously there are not just illustrators working in the publishing world. There are also designers, editors, distribution, the legal team and much more.

Monsters: A Bestiary of the Bizarre
As a task I was asked to look at one of my favourite books and look at its publisher. I looked at some of my art books and found a book called “Monsters: A Bestiary of the Bizarre”. I decided to look at its publisher who is “Thames & Hudson”. I find them interesting because they try to show a lot of art in their books. They try to make things more accessible to the general public.
