I want to begin my animal artist research by looking at
Terryl Whitlatch. I have known about her work for quit a long time now and have
always found it to be very interesting. She illustrates a mix of real creatures
and her own fantasy creations, some of which have been used in Lucasfilm. I thaught
this was why it would be good to look at her work as I will also have to create my own fantasy animal.

This is an example of Terryl Whitlatch's style |

She is very understanding of animal anatomy and zoology which
shows in her work. I think this really helps with the made up beast designs
because it makes them more believable. It makes the creatures seem more like real
living things. Her illustrations are drawn by hand which makes them even more impressive.
I think this helps with the texture on the animals as digital colouring can often look fake
and plastic, it gives them a more organic look. I’m not sure what medium she
uses, I know she uses Copic markers but there might be other medium in her
work. I like her use of colour, she manages to use bright and interesting
colours but still keeps an organic look.

Some more anatomy study's, this time of Deer & Antelope |
I want to remember Terryl Whitlatch when doing my own designs.
I want my creature to look interesting and well thought out. I also want to remember the
real world and how animals work if I am to make a convincing beast.
below is a link to Terryl Whitlatch site. Its well worth a look.
