This week I have been looking at exhibitions and the role
they play in the modern industry.
Permanent galleries
Most exhibitions take place in what are known as permanent
galleries. These are brick and water establishments which always display some
form of art. They can be large galleries “like the V&A in London” or small
converted shops, they all serve a similar purpose. Some galleries will stick to
a theme or house art work for an extended period of time. For instance some
galleries will show graphics and illustration, others may show classical
paintings. As an illustration student galleries are a part of the industry I
can pay mind to. It has not always been this way however. Only recently has
illustration been seen as gallery material and is often called “Affordable
Art”.

National exhibitions
National Exhibitions are also an important thing for artists
to look at. They often follow up a competition of some large event. They can
give a lot of recognition to an artist and sometimes they tour. Sometimes they
try to stick to a national style for the purpose of the show. National
Exhibitions can also take place in a permanent gallery.
Festivals
Illustration festivals are where
illustrators and designers can meet up. They also do a lot of things like
workshops and live drawing. They don’t just sell prints but also t shirts, mugs,
jewellery and all sorts of
other designed items. A good example of a festival is PICK ME UP at Summerset House in London. It happens once every year and is a great place for people to
meet up and look round.
Outdoor Indoor walls
A more resent way of creating an exposition is by painting
on the walls. This can take place both inside and out. A lot of outside
exhibitions include graffiti and street art. One good example is “UPFEST”.
UPFEST is a Bristle based urban art gallery, they hold graffiti painting exhibits
with a whole range of artists, illustrators and designers. When this sort of
thing is done inside a building then it is often done with markers on walls or
large sheets of paper.
Of all the different exhibitions I have looked at I
think illustration Festivals are the most fun sounding to me but it’s all down
to personal taste. I would love to have a go at some of these things if if I make it into the professional industry. It was interesting to have a read
up on them all and I will keep them in mind.
