Class talk by Paul Greco

Work by Paul Greco
Today we had a visit from an artist as part of professional studies. This time it was the illustrator/graphic designer Paul Greco. He works mainly as a Printmaker but also studies Photography and Digital Manipulation. He works in both traditional mediums and digital.

He began his lecture by talking about visual and emotional intelligence. He explained why they are so important to his and other graphic work. Visual intelligence is where we can recognize something from an image. The example he used was spotting animals in an environment. This is because it's a primal response that we try to make shape of a predator. Emotional intelligence is where we recognize something from within our life time. It would be something we have already seen, like a dog or a car. By using the information it means you can make an image by only indicating it.

In the lecture he went on to talk about some of the work he has done. He talked about some of the exhibitions he has worked in. one of them was for London zoo where he made a set of prints based on the reptile house. His work always seems to have a theme to it. He includes a lot of snakes and light bulbs in his work. I suppose that is just his style.

After the lecture we got to talk with Paul in small class groups. He went through his portfolio and let us look at some of his work. I found some of it to be cool looking. I especially liked his dry point prints.

Overall the talk was a bit different to the other talks we have had. It was nice to meet an artist who works on printing as I am interested in the topic.
