The Book of Drawings. Artist research/ Archibald Thorburn

During my research I came across the work of Archibald Thorburn. He mainly illustrated birds but sometimes studied other animals like whales. I was impressed by the level of detail in his paintings. They really capture the animal in a natural way. He also did species charts like Oken but I think Thorburn’s illustrations show the animals in a more realistic perception. He also illustrated the animals depicted in their own environments. I think this is a good thing as it helps the reader understand the creature a bit more. Below are some examples of his work.
