The Book of Drawings. Artist research/ Maria Sibylla Merian

Now moving on to my artist research I want to start with the illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian. She was a very important illustrator in her time as she was one of the first woman to illustrate the natural world. I think her work has a distinct look and style even though it maintains it;s scientific look. She used a mix of technique in her work but always seems to capture the subject. I particularly like her use of colour as the palette in her work looks natural but colourful. The shading techniques that she uses give her work an almost cinematic quality, this gives the image more depth. Below are some examples of Merian’s work.
